No matter what kind of traveller you are, trails, paths, and parks around Nanaimo are perfect for year-round adventures. Here are five local favourites to get you started.

Walking and Hiking in Nanaimo

Mount Benson

If you're looking for a challenging hike to get your cardio up, check out Mount Benson. This 8km hike offers stunning year-round city, ocean, and coastal mountain views while delivering a panoramic glimpse of the Gulf Islands. The forested trail is steep and rough in places; allow 3 to 5 hours for a return trip and pack plenty of water.

The Extension Ridge Trail

Also known as The Abyss Trail, this moderate hike is popular amongst hikers, mountain bikers, and trail runners for its challenging terrain and beautiful views. The trail, nicknamed after its namesake feature, boasts one of the city's most photographed natural features. Be careful and keep dogs on leash while marvelling at this natural landmark.

Cable Bay Nature Trail

This 6.6km trail nestled near the coastline of Cedar is a must-do any time of year. The trail is a light and easy walk, perfect for everyone in your group. Take in the sights and smells of the forest as you watch for wildlife relaxing on the rocky shoreline. The Cable Bay Trail is also a great place for birdwatchers! Find more birdwatching opportunities by checking out the Nanaimo itinerary on the BC Bird Trail.

Colliery Dam Park

Bring your bathing suit on hot days and go for a dip, or connect with nature on tranquil forest paths. With multi-use trails, an off-leash dog area, a swimmable lake, and waterfalls, Colliery Dam Park is a great spot to spend an afternoon and is popular with locals year-round!

Ammonite Falls

No trip to Nanaimo would be complete without seeing Ammonite Falls. The falls have been around for a few hundred million years and are named after the collection of ammonite fossils in the area, including one that might be the largest ever found on Vancouver Island. Only a short hike from the Nanaimo Parkway, the falls are a great spot to visit if you're looking for a short excursion any time of year and some breathtaking photo ops.
